Anime-BAW #3: Harem Genre (Part 2)

Image
Harems.... So. Many. Harems. Anime has so many harem series that it's practically a harem of harems out there. That's why I'm doing a multi-part Best/Average/Worst  (now officially titled Anime-BAW  for short) on the genre. Today, we'll look at a few sci-fi harem series that I've seen recently. Best: Hundred-- This is your typical sci-fi/future school anime, wherein the protagonist becomes the only male student at an all-girls school because of his high " Hundred  score," a compatibility statistic that determines whether or not someone can summon a magical girl/mecha-style battle armor called a " Hundred"  and pilot it against mysterious alien creatures termed "Savages." Of course, the hero has the highest Hundred score ever recorded because as a child, he was infected with Savage blood and became a "Variant." That means that under times of extreme stress, his Hundred changes form and he loses control of himself against wh

Anime - Best/Average/Worst #2: Harem Genre (Part 1)

Image
Greetings, Anime-niacs! The time has come for another edition of Best/Average/Worst , where I pick three anime in a given genre and tell you as briefly as I can why each one is the best, the worst, or just average. Today's genre (and the genre up for discussion for at least the next three Anime-BAW  posts) is the Harem genre. The Harem genre is one of those that can cross over with other common anime genres, most commonly the isekai , fantasy, school life, sci-fi, and supernatural genres. It typically centers around a boring, generic, timid, indecisive, horny, male virgin who either finds himself as the only male student in an all-girls school for some conveniently biology-related world-saving reason, or wakes up to find that some supernatural creature, alien, monster, or other non-human humanoid girl has literally fallen into his lap. There are other harem contrivances, too, such as the return of an old childhood friend or the almost-incest scenario of "meet your new stepsist

Anime - Best/Average/Worst #1: Fantasy Genre

Greetings, Anime-niacs! No, I'm not trying to get sued by Warner Bros. for using the name of one of their most popular 90's cartoons as an anime-derived replacement for Ticketholders when I address you guys. I changed a letter and added a hyphen, so it's okay! Besides, I don't do this for the money anyway. Speaking of, anyway , welcome one and all to Best/Average/Worst  (which is either the best, most average, or worst title I could have concocted at two past the witching hour), a column wherein I try to quickly review three anime I have seen in a particular genre so far, which each also fall into a Best (perfect or nearly so), Average (in need of minor resolution or some other element that might elevate it to special), or Worst (annoying, superficial, or otherwise hateworthy) category. Today, as you might have guessed from the title, we're looking at entries from the fantasy genre. Now, when it comes to anime (of which I have watched a ton lately), just about ever

TicketVerse Trades #2: Grimm Fairy Tales Volume 1

As I said last time , it's been six months since I posted anything. I've been writing more Retrospective content offline and compiling digital paperbacks with as many exclusive variant cover images as I can find. In most cases, I also edit the size and quality of the page images to make each Digital Trade Volume a uniform reading experience. But given the length of time since my last  Retrospective  post, I think that before I get to posting this new content I've been working on, a refresher course is in order. So I'll begin by issuing a series of TicketVerse Trades  on the DTVs I have already covered, starting with this post. Each of the TicketVerse Trades  in this series will feature a download link to its Digital Trade Volume in .rar format (containing a large number of .jpeg files) so that you can read along with my spoiler-laden witticisms, fairy tale trivia, insights into the series, and occasional scathing social commentary. Note: I have replaced the file that

Stay Tuned #10: Five Supernatural Season 14 Theories I Came Up With (Spoilers)

Image
I just finished bingeing season thirteen of Supernatural , the CW's long-running show about two brothers who save people (and the world) and hunt things using a host of dead rockstar aliases and a trunkfull of lore-accurate monster-killing swag. They've defeated ghosts, vampires, werewolves, demons, pagan gods, angels, witches, Death, death, Lucifer, God's sister, an ancient, evil monster-hunting organization, and the President. SPOILERS AHEAD! Now, after losing their resurrected mother to an alternate apocalypse dimension and watching Crowley and Castiel die, the brothers Winchester have teamed with the son of Lucifer (a perfectly cast Alexander Calvert, whose appearance and mannerisms are so reminiscent of Misha Collins' Castiel that they almost make Calvert's Jack into an ironic middle finger to daddy Lucifer). The bulk of their character dynamic here comes from Jack's birth being the cause of the interdimensional rift that trapped Mary Winchester in th
